USB extended keyboard not recognized after software update

Looking for support concerning my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019) failing to recognize the USB extended keyboard after every software update. I have been able to get the keyboard to work in past updates by resetting SMC, PRAM, and doing the shut down dance (un-plug power and all USB connections, hold the power button for 5 seconds, restore power, restart, and plug in the keyboard USB). And yes, the keyboard works just fine on all other apple computers.


However, with update to Version 12.0.1 (21A559) am unable to get the wired keyboard to be recognized. I can connect an apple non-extended bluetooth keyboard with no problem.

Is there any magic I have missed trying to get the keyboard to be recognized?

Do I have to purchase a bluetooth version of my wired extended keyboard?

iMac 27″, macOS 10.13

That sounds more like a problem with USB ports on the computer if the board works on other Macs.


How many USB devices are attached to the computer in addition to the keyboard, and what types of devices are they? The issue of numbers comes up in this support article:

The 2019 iMac ships with a Magic Keyboard which is wireless and charges from a USB cable.

For what it's worth I have always preferred a wired keyboard. Wireless keyboards seem to often have problems being connected via bluetooth. It's hard to say exactly what your problem is, but there are a couple of things I would recommend trying. First, have you gone into Preferences and checked what the keyboard settings are there?Second, try doing a restart in the Safe Mode. Press the Shift key on restart. Be patient as this can take up to 10 minutes while the operating system is fixing things and emptying the caches. sometimes, this fixes a lot of things. Then restart normally and see what happens and please report back.
