My apple usb extended keyboard is no longer recognised by my iMac.
I experienced the same problem last year and was able to fix it by restarting in safe mode, and then restating again. This time, that remedy does not work.
I don't know whether this is relevant, but if I look at the system report the serial number of the keyboard is shown as "000000000000".

Replace with new, the old one is obsolete. I can recommend Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad for Mac models - Apple, works perfectly.

It's possible the keyboard failed. Hard to say without trying it on a different computer.
You could try resetting the SMC.
How old is it? Have you tried a different port(s)?
The iMac is a 27 inch late 2015. The keyboard will be of the same vintage. Yes, I have tried different ports, also the keyboard still functions as a hub.
