I finally upgraded to Big Sur from Mojave a couple of months ago. Ever since then, the Music app only sporadically updates last played and play count information for tracks that I have played. This is really annoying, as most of the playlists that I listen to regularly are based at least in part on songs that I haven't heard in a while. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I've seen a hint somewhere that opening a new library and enabling sync library, either in the current profile, or perhaps a different one, may help fix this plays syncing issue. Sorry not to be more precise.

OK, is it plays made in the library that aren't getting counted, or are they failing to update when you sync a device? Is crossfade enabled? Are you using AirPlay to play via HomePod or something similar?

It doesn't update when I play songs in the library. It does update when I play songs on my Apple TVs, or through Audirvana in Integrated Mode. Crossfade is not enabled. I use AirPlay to play to my Apple TVs, but only to display video, not play music. Thanks!
Thanks for suggesting Apple Support. I talked to them, and it turns out that this was a recognized bug, and was fixed in OS 11.5.1 - for some reason my Mini didn't automatically update. Got it to update, and now everything is working fine. Thanks!
Might still be worth testing behaviour in a new library and/or user profile. You may need to try Apple Support.

Thanks, but I think that sync library applies only to the Apple Music service, which I don't use.
