Connection of MacBook to iMac

I am trying to connect a MacBook 2020 model to 2012 iMac to use the screen as a display via a thunderbolt cable and it will not work. My old MacBook connects without any worries but my new one will not. any suggestions?

Use imac as display I am trying to connect my macbook pro (latest model) to my imac (latest model) and use my imac as a display. I connected the two with a Thunderbolt USB-C cable and then pressed Command + F2 but still doesn't work. Am I missing any steps?

Trying to connect macbook pro with 2014 Imac as display running macOS Catalina I'm using macOS Catalina, does that mean I can no longer use target display or use my imac screen as a display at all? I recently got a new macbook pro and bought the thunderbolt adapter, is there now no way to use my imac screen due to the os?

Hi mposullivan,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

Sorry, but 2020 and newer Macs are not compatible with Target Display Mode. The output Mac needs to be 2019 or earlier, running macOS 10.15 Catalina or earlier.
