'Relocation Folder' after Upgrade to Big Sur 11.3

I upgraded to Big Sur 11.3 today and logged back in to find a Relocation Folder on my Desktop. It contains a Configuration Folder and a document, written in Applese that is impossible for me to understand. When I click on the Configuration folder, it makes its way through various folders until it reaches a document called group.system_default which my iMac cannot open.

As far as I can tell, my iMac is working properly but I am left with a mystery. What am I supposed to do next? Can I safely ignore the Relocation Folder? Can I erase it?

Not for the first time, upgrading creates headaches for those of us who are not technos and just want the the iMac to do simple things properly. A simple explanation would be much appreciated.

I had a link to a relocated items folder on my desktop after upgrading to 11.3 and I deleted the link. I have had this before and I choose to ignore it and delete the files referenced in the link a few weeks after the upgrade.

This just means that some file were placed in a location that is no longer allowed, like at the top level of your drive. Unless there is a file in there that you want to keep, it is perfectly fine to drag this folder to the trash.

What version did you upgrade FROM? I ask because I can’t see why this folder would appear if you are just updating from a previous version of Big Sur to 11.3.

Thank you for your helpful reply. I can see no files in the folders within today's Configuration Folder, just the mystery document.

I bought this iMac in November 2020 and it came with Big Sur installed. I have always kept this iMac up-to-date with the latest version of Big Sur. This is the first time a Relocation Folder has been left on my Desktop.

When I tried to log in this morning, the keyboard and mouse would not connect with the iMac. I switched off the iMac and after a gap, I switched back on to find I needed to follow a procedure to get keyboard and mouse connected again. I was required to turn off Filevault encryption which allowed me to re-start the iMac normally. However, My Filevault is now decrypting, a process which it says will take 6 hours. I would rather not have the FileVault decrypted but I am at a loss what to do. Do I let it run and then allow it to encrypt again? Was this a coincidence or is this a result of upgrading to Big Sur 11.3 yesterday?

Thank you for your reply. It is always good to know that you are not the only one with an issue and to hear that you had no negative effect from ignoring the folder and, ultimately, deleting it.

I am planning to do the same but, meanwhile, I hope the upgrade to 11.3 has not caused a permanent problem for me logging in to my iMac. I will be a major problem if the issue (as outlined above) recurs every time I shut down and try to log back in again.

I am told by Apple Support just to leave the Relocation Folder on the desk top. It is not an issue.

Regarding my login difficulty after updating to Big Sur 11.3, I have found that if I leave FileVault turned off, the issue disappears and I can log in normally. I will do that for now.

Apple support tried several solutions, none of which worked. The option remains to erase the hard disk and re-build from back up hard drive but it seems draconian and I am not confident that it would work without raising other issues. Accordingly, I will simply leave Filevault turned off for now.

There is not reason to do so, nor is there any reason to not just delete the folder in /Users/Shared.

Every update will generate a new folder.

They are usually just full of configuration files that were replaced.

If you recognize any of them that you know you altered, you can use those to help reconfigure the new files.

If you don't recognize anything, you can just delete the folder.

Probably less than one tenth of one percent of users will ever modify the files that it puts in Relocated Items.

Thank you for your reply. Actually, upgrading to Big Sur 11.3 was the first time an upgrade placed a Relocation Folder on my iMac's desktop and hence the question. I am pleased it can be safely ignored. Thank you.

I now have an update to 11.3.1 pending. I am beginning to fear updates given my login problem from 11.3 but this one contains 'important security updates' so I will update and hope for the best.
