Restoring a new iphone from an icloud backup

I upgraded from a iphone 8 + to a iphone 12 pro max. The 8+ had a recent back-up to icloud. When restoring, 2 weeks later, it has not completed the restore. I have restarted the phone multiple times, it is connected to WiFi, and still, not completing the restore. There seems to be no way to monitor what is happening, no way to see the hangup, no way to see what is occurring or what is not occuring... The phone has apps and is working, but what is going on with the restore?

Well, unless that backup is corrupted, I don't see any good reason why it cannot be restored.

Is the 8+ still in your hands? have you tried a quick start or a migration using these instructions? :--> Use Quick Start to transfer data to a new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Yes - connected to power

Yes - connected to WiFi

Yes - it was a recent backup

No - restore is hung for a week with nothing happening

Yes - restarted the phone

No - restore will not finish

No - cannot see what the progress is or what is hung up

Is your destination iPhone (12) running an iOS version equal or more recent than the one that was used to create the iCloud backup with the old unit (8+)?

Yes, both iphones were running the current iOS

I no longer have the 8+. I should have backed it up to the computer. I stopped the restore and the phone seems to be working fine at this point. Not sure I will trust a icloud backup in the future
