iPhone storage in messages

My messages storage is taking up 4.17 GB. I have deleted all of the attachments and most messages and have it set to delete after 30 days. Messages takes up the majority of what’s stored on my phone. I can’t update. This has been like this for months. Help! I have an iPhone 6s
