how do i get rid of my messages because there taking up so much storage in my phone

Delete them.
Open the Messages App and swipe from right to left until you see the red and white trashcan icon. Tap on that to delete the messages.

What do you mean it did not work?
Did they not delete? Did you get an error? If so, what did it say?
If they did delete, then you may also need to delete them from the Recently Deleted Folder to release the space.
Tap on the Edit or Filters option at the top left of the Messages App, and then on Recenlty deleted.
Tap on the circle next to the message to select it, and then on Delete. to completely remove it.
It may taker a moment for the used storage to re-calculate and show the difference.
