iMovie audio recording doesn't work

iMovie works on Big Sur and the new MacBook Air M1 like a charm - except of one thing: audio recording.

Audio can be imported without any issues, but it seems that Audio in doesn't work at all - not with a USB microphone neither with the built in mic.

The equalizer doesn't show any audio - and if recording, there is nothing to be heard.

In the system preferences you can see though that the audio input does work (equalizer in audio settings does work).

Is there anything I missed?

You probably just need to enable the microphone. Go to System Preferences/Security & Privacy/Privacy and click on Microphone in the left sidebar. Then scroll to iMovie in the right hand pane and check the box next to iMovie. You will need first to click on the little lock icon at the bottom of the left sidebar, and sign in, in order to make changes.
