iPhone and MacOS

When you get a message saying "a software update is required to connect to iPhone," does this refer to the OS or special software related to the issue? I am still using Mojave and my iPhone is version 14.4.

I am unable to tell whether iTunes can be updated separately. It is version 12.9.5.5, and Mojave is its latest version 10.14.6, as far as I know. I don't want to be forced to upgrade for the very same reason you said to be careful. I have already determined that it's not worth it for me. I don't want to be forced into upgrading just to be compatible with the phone. So can I conclude that the message does mean I need to upgrade the entire OS?
