Voiceover not working despite all settings ok - Final Cut Pro

Hey i'm really struggling to get the voiceover function to work. I've spent last few days googling and youtube'n for the answer. But no joy whatever i do.

So i have final cut pro x trial on a mac book pro (big sur 11.2) and i'm using a blue yeti mic.

Sound is recorded on every other app i have, from the usb mic and the onboard one.

Using the voice over feature it recognises my mic and when i speak the green bar next to the record button bounces from side to side confirming that it can hear me. However when i click record, it saves a file on my timeline that is silent.

In the privacy preferences my mic is ticked to allow access to the app. I have also unchecked it multiple times and restarted my machine and the app to see if it would do anything.

My library and video files are on an USB external drive.

On the voiceover settings under 'advanced' i have tried the input as 'system settings' as well as both mono channels and the stereo of the yeti.

I have tried to unplug the yeti and try the system mic as well. But this provides the same results.

Is there something that i'm missing here?

Any help very much appreciated.

You just gave a crucial detail... the fact that it fails on an external drive.

Go to System Preferences->Security & Privacy->Privacy and add Final Cut Pro Trial to the list of applications allowed "Full Disk Access". It will look similar to this (the difference is the image I have is for the full version)

It looks like you did everything right.

Try deleting the application preferences. This is usually the first thing to try when something is not working right.

To delete preferences, hold down command and option while starting FCP X and click Delete Preferences.

The application will start in a default state, and open an "Untitled" library. Reopen the library you were working on, set the preferences the way you like them, and try again.

Thanks for your quick reply.

I had previously tried deleting the preferences with no success (forgot to mention on the message above). I tried it here and i did not work.

I then out of frustration just created a new untitled library/project on my desktop and dragged a video file in from my desktop and attempted a voiceover and it worked.

However when i go back to my main project (which is on the external drive) the voiceover still does not work and give me a silent clip on the timeline.

Does this mean theres an issue with that library or my drive?

Is there a way to save the work i done so far to a new project?

Just to add when i was looking at my external drive i found a folder in the library with hundreds of voice clips i had attempted over the last few days which had sound, so it was recording all the time it just does not display inside of FCP.

Many thanks so far.
