My iMac did not open the macOS recovery with control r

My iMac received the circle error screen. I followed the instructions turning the iMac off (10 second hold on power button to turn off). Turned it back on and immediately held the control and R buttons simultaneously. Only a dark screen is showing. Any suggestions on how to get to the macOS recovery screen?
