based on the orange dot, how do I tell which app is using the microphone? Using iPhone 11 running iOS 14.2.

Usually you know because you are using the microphone with the app; for example, Siri, Voice Memo or a phone call. But if you open the Control Center by dragging down from the upper right corner of the screen it will show the app at the very top of the screen.
