Since downloading Big Sur I cannot access iMessage

Messages appears on screen as expected showing all previous messages and then another box appears asking me to sign into iMessage with my Apple ID. When I do this a message appears, in the same box, stating that 'an unknown error has occurred'. I have tried closing down and restarting but the error remains. Any ideas please? Thanks Phil.
