My daughter has a MacBook that doesn't have a large hard drive. She would like to remove the physical music files (mp3/acc eat.) from her hard drive, but keep the playlists with streaming versions of the songs from Apple Music. I know you can do this with the iPhone by going to the Music app preferences and deleting downloaded files. Is this possible on a Mac, or will the songs have to be re-added through Music?

Yes, as long as the tracks are matched or uploaded then it should be safe to use the remove download option. See Identify cloud status icons in your music library on your Mac or PC - Apple Support.

If you have an active subscription to either Apple Music or iTunes Match then you can right-click selected songs and use Remove Download to free up local storage. Ideally you would take a complete backup of the library on an external drive first so that any item deleted in error, or mismatched, could be replaced if needed.

Thank you. We do have a Apple Music subscription. Does this apply to songs that were in her library before the subscription? Burned mp3s and Amazon and iTunes downloads?
