Hello i have a genuine Apple multiport adapter which works fine through HDMI running my second monitor and a hard drive connected through the standard USB port, but wont charge through a USB C to C cable.
Can anyone help? I thought it was supposed to charge.
I have a 2020 iMac.

The USB-C port of that adapter is for use only if the adapter is connected to a laptop or iPad. It lets you connect a charger to power the laptop or iPad. It cannot be used as a normal USB-C port and cannot provide power.

I'm not clear on what you are attempting to charge. Also, does the external HD have it's own power supply or are you attempting to power it via the bus? I strongly recommend using an external HD that has it's own power.
Im trying to charge a mobile phone, a Google Pixel 2.
Ive tried a few HDDs, powered and unpowered through the USB A port with no issues. I've unplugged everything and it still doesn't charge thorough the USB C though. I've also tried a tablet through the USB C and that doesn't charge either.
I've tried multiple leads too. I know the lead works as it works on a wall charger, and also when plugged directly into the mac, just not when plugged into the multiport adapter.
Your computer has a power limit on how many USB devices it can support.
The HDMI Multi-port adapter, was never intended to be used as a charging station.
If you need more USB-A ports, you can use a self-power USB-A multi-port hub. (many have charging ports)
Or you can use simple USB-C to USB-A adapters to get more USB-A ports. (which may or may not support charging)

Ideally and IMHO, it is best to use the wall charger(s) that came with the hand held devices instead of your computer.
