USB-C to USB Adapter doesn't work with USB Superdrive

I bought a USB-C to USB Adapter to connect my USB Superdrive to my new Macbook Pro. Can't get the Superdrive USB plug into the adapter. Why? What do I need to use the Superdrive (2.03) with the Macbook Pro?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 10.15

I'm getting the message USB Accessory Needs Power: Connect "Apple USB SuperDrive" to a USB port on this Mac. Impossible to do so directly as the connector from the disk drive is USB. What gives?
