itunes detects phone but wants to set up as new or restore an old backup and I want to TAKE a backup!! WTH?

So frustrated!

Bought boyfriend a new iphone. Logged into itunes with his account.

itunes detects phone but wants to set up as new or restore an old backup of MY phone, and I want to TAKE a backup of his phone!! WTH?

I also find that wording to be very confusing (and a bit scary) even though I have done it several times. Choose the set up as new option; it does not do anything to the phone, just records it as a new phone on iTunes on that computer. Then do the backup.

haha not meant to be confusing (or SCARY)- BF does not do electronics and I normally do, so I've been delegated the task - just want to be certain I'm not inadvertently erasing his phone - he'd not be too pleased....so I can set his old phone up as a new phone, take a backup and then take the new phone and set it up? Am I correct in my understanding?
