Trying to unlock and old ipod touch

I was digging through my old drawers and I discovered my old Ipod touch 4g. When I charged it, it says "connect to Itunes, Ipod is disabled". I connected it in recovery mode, and I cant update the software and my old option is to restore it. I do not think I have any backups of this phone and doubt i used Icloud. Is there any way to get all of it back and unlock it? I can use 3rd party software but don't want to pay for anything.

Hello,

Unfortunately you must now fully restore your iPod to factory settings.
