i've signed up for Apple TV, free for 12 months, then 4,99 a month after that.
When I open the app and click on a TV show, it says that I have to pay for it, so I am a tad confused. If you have to pay for the TV shows, what is the subscription for?

The subscription, paid or free is the same for all. Nobody is getting free access to tv show or movies that require renting or buying.
Your subscription is for Apple TV +
Apple TV + is Apple Original content. It’s a channel found within the Apple TV App. The shows included in your subscription will have the tv+ logo on them - those are free.
Thanks Niel. So anyone not getting the 12 months free offer would be paying 4.99 a month, but would only be able to watch one or two programmes, then they'd have to pay even more, to watch anything else? Seems a tad queer, but OK. I'll enjoy the freebies, but will probably move on after that :)
Accessing Apple-original content. Movies and TV shows from other producers still need to be bought/rented.
