Apple tv app

Can some one please explain to me how the Apple TV app works?

i see there is a monthly subscription (which i know some will get the subscription for free) but then you pay for the shows, is that correct?

I’m just trying to get my head around it.

There are 2 different things

Apple TV app is an app where you can rent and buy movies/ tv shows and watch some free to air content from your local TV providers.
Apple TV+ is an all-new streaming subscription service from Apple. Watch original shows and films, ad-free and on demand, in 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos sound.
