Usually shift-command-4 allows to select a portion of screen and get a screen shot ont the desktop. Since I installed Catalina, when using these keys, There is a noise (of error I believe) and nothing happens.
Looking for any advice!

I did restart the Mac book pro and I had read all this information about Catalina.
Now when these 3 keys are pressed absolutely nothing happens not even the noise...
What is wrong with me? I was using these commands all the time even a few days ago before I installed Catalina???
I am having this same problem. (and several others since upgrading to Catalina.)
Can you tell me specifically what you did to fix the problem? I did go to keyboard in system preferences and thought iu found place to reset the settings, but screenshot still not working! Thank you!!
Haven't completely sussed this out yet, but notice that when I capture a screen, I see a thumbnail of my screengrab in the lower right-hand corner of my monitor -- clicking on it allows one to annotate and do other things, but where it saves -- if it saves -- I haven't been able to as yet ascertain.
Opening the Keyboard system prefs pane isn't working for me at the moment, so I'm going to restart and see if that allows the pane to open properly.
Ok, the default is still to save to the desktop. You can change this by hitting cmd-shift-F5, which for me was being used by a third party screen capture tool which I needed to disable. After restarting, all the screengrabs I had taken showed up on my desktop. Hope this helps.
It does work just not the way it use to. You will see a picture of the screen shot in the lower left had corner of you desktop near the dock.
Just click the "X" pin that picture and you will then see the file on your desktop with name "Screen Shot date time"
An extra step but it DOES work on Catalina
"IT was fixed" & now works AS it did before Catalina Update.
But I am enjoying the Finder Window popping UP every other second!
Know I am not the only one & SEE another Update.
Afraid to look OR MAYBE "THAT" will be the FIX.

I went to preference system- keyboard and restored the original setting and this fixed my problem!!!

i have the same problem.... help needed
I noticed that if I closed that Screen Capture in lower right-hand corner, "Screen Shot Dated Time" file is created on my desktop like it use to before with my older operating system.
