screenshot doesn't put image on desktop

When I use Shift-Command-4 to take a partial screenshot of my iMac screen, the png image does not appear on the desktop. I found it in trash instead. Yesterday, my first day on Catalina, the png file appeared on the desktop many minutes after I took the screenshot, not immediately as expected.

Screenshot disappears on iMac running Catalina Whenever I take a screenshot, the photo appears on my desktop for a few moments, then it evaporates. I can't find it anywhere. Anyone else had this problem?

Disappearing screenshots - or do they? I've found, since Catalina, that if I take a screenshot (Cmd-shift-4) I get an image at the bottom left of my screen, but the file doesn't appear on my desktop so I can't double-click it to open it in Preview. However, if I start Preview and click 'Open', the file is on the desktop. Screenshot below shows the desktop with two files on it but the Open screen in Preview (or even attaching a file from this posting screen) shows all the files... Anybody know what's going on, please? Thanks, Pete

By the 3rd day of Catalina use, my partial screenshot was working properly every time. Must have been a Catalina "settling in" issue.
