Having trouble opening safari and other windows at the same time

I used to be able to open safari and other applications and keep them all on the screen at the same time. I think I pressed something by accident, and now every time I am in safari and go to check Notes, for example, it disappears from the screen. How do I go back to being able to see all my applications on the same screen at the same time?

If you do a control - up arrow, how many Desktops show at the top? If you are opening applications in the Full Screen mode, each application has its own Desktop. If you have been using Full Screen Mode and exit it (command - control - F), do the applications appear on the same Desktop?
