Apple Watch Ultra 2 Black Titanium Bezel Paint Fading After 2 Months. Warranty Denied

Hi Apple Community,

I’d like to share my experience and hopefully get some insights or help from others who might be in a similar situation.

I bought my Apple Watch Ultra 2 (Black Titanium) about 2 months ago, and I’ve used it very lightly (not even on a daily basis). Recently, I noticed that the paint on the bottom right bezel has started to fade, revealing a more silver tone underneath. I was really surprised, especially since I haven’t bumped or scratched it, and I’ve taken great care of it.

I took the watch to an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) here in Indonesia to have it checked, but my warranty claim was rejected, being classified as "cosmetic damage." I also called Apple Support directly and got the same answer, they said it’s not covered under warranty.

I totally understand that cosmetic damage is generally not covered, but this feels more like a manufacturing or coating defect, not normal wear and tear. The watch still looks brand new overall, aside from this unusual spot.

I genuinely love this product! especially the Black Titanium version. I had been waiting for it since it was announced, and it was a big moment for me when I finally bought it. But this issue honestly left me disappointed.

Has anyone else experienced similar bezel discoloration or fading on their Ultra 2?

And is there any other route I could take to get this reviewed again by Apple?

Thanks so much for reading. I’d really appreciate any advice or thoughts from the community.

Sonny

Hey SonnyWillim,

What you are experiencing does seem to be the norm. There are several videos on YouTube that reference this issue. Here is an example: https://youtu.be/St8fJThlEK4

I am not saying this is OK or ‘correct,’ but I believe it is common.

I DO NOT have any warranty solution for you.

There are two cosmetic solutions that I am aware of that may possibly work for you.

The first is easy. Use a black Sharpie marker to blacken the scratched areas. This is a temporary fix you will have to reapply from time to time. This can be done easily and will not affect your warranty. I have done this on many items and it is somewhat effective.

The second is much more controversial. You could attempt to add some bluing liquid to the device using a precise direct application. I have read some posts regarding this. Please do not take this as a suggestion, simply an option. Note, this should not hurt your device in any way functionally (as long as you keep the liquid on only the metal). That being said, I have no idea of the effectiveness or the warranty issues it may create.

If you are not familiar with bluing liquid, in general, it is what is put on metal to give it that blackish color (think gun barrel). Now, bluing liquid does not traditionally work on Titanium, so I am not sure how people are having any success (nor do I know the exact composite make-up of the material in the watch).

My hope with this post is to possibly provide some sort of remedy for you. Sorry I cannot help directly with Apple. This is just my two cents and it may possibly be worth less than that.

All the best.
