Where can I find the hardware diagnostic report results from the built-in diagnostic tool?

Hello community,

After noticing issues with computer when streaming videos via browser, I ran an EtherCheck Pro and saw my computer suffers from Kernel panics.

I asked an AI tool what could that be and got the following advice:

To troubleshoot, try the following steps:
1. Run a diagnostic test: Restart your MacBook Pro and immediately hold down the 'D' key. This will run a diagnostic test on your hardware.
2. Check for software updates: Ensure your macOS and all installed software are up-to-date.
3. Reset System Management Controller (SMC): Shut down your MacBook Pro, locate the following keys: Power button, Command (⌘) + Option (⌥) + Shift (⇧) + Power button. Press and hold these keys while powering on your MacBook Pro. Release the keys when you hear the boot chime for the second time.
4. Run Disk Utility: Restart your MacBook Pro and immediately hold down the 'Command (⌘) + R' keys. This will boot into Recovery Mode. Open Disk Utility and run a scan on your startup disk.
5. Monitor system logs: Check the Console app (in Applications/Utilities) for any error messages related to the Kernel Panic.

So I did step 1. I run the diagnostic test, but was not able to see any of the results. Instead I got a screen asking to check for my service options. I don't want want to determine my support options.... I have none, the computer is from 2015...

Any idea where I can find the results for the hardware diagnostic?

the code is of little significance Code: PPP007 if you did not have the power plugged in

To trouble shoot further you can:

—A SafeBoot Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

Does a quick disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled temporarily.

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.

This test will tell you if third party interference; most extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

—Test issue in another user (or guest user) account Change Users & Groups settings on Mac - Apple Support

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

***wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries— connect the charging cable, this will make the wired keyboard successful Safe Boot your Mac.

unplug all non-essential peripherals when testing. Leave it plugged into power.

Uninstall all third party apps that are Cleaners/Optimizers/VPN/Anti-Virus

EtreCheck creates a report designed to be posted here for experienced users to review and help you with the techies bits. Example, the kernel panics have a cause, and the full report can show what is causing them. So far, you have not benefitted from using EtreCheck. Please see this user-submitted tip on how to post a long report like Etrecheck's:

The reports may not show much to a new user but can speak volumes to those of us who have reviewed thousands of them. The report scrub any persoanle of security info to make it safe to post.

Hello,

Yes, I know that EtreChecks produces large reports. On purpose I have not posted that without first getting some interaction / activity on this thread...

Are you interested in reading my EtreCheck report and share findings? If so I will share it.

And yes, I did not realise there was my serial number there... was on my 10th or 11th hour of screen time that day.

Hello there.

Thanks for the suggestions

The power adaptor should not be relevant for the following reasons:

  1. The problems I encounter are not when the computer is plugged in.
  2. The battery is one year old. It was replaced by a good repair shop with an LMP battery https://lmp-adapter.com
  3. Power Adaptor is pretty new as well. Bought a new one about two years ago when the other one died.

The idea of a disk repair makes sense also booting on a Guest user. I will try that and revert back here.

No more interaction is really possible without an EtreCheck repot especially since your system is having Kernel Panics. Kernel Panics can be caused by hardware or software and the EtreCheck will give us some insight into possible software issues plus hopefully the Kernel Panic summary will include enough relevant information as well.

The EtreCheck report saves a lot time and back & forth 20 questions.

Generally that may be true, but I have seen where the system may have issues after connecting/disconnecting the power adapter which can be due to issues with the laptops power/charging circuitry. Somewhat rare for this to happen with the connect/disconnect, but it can happen. I haven't seen too many details about your specific system behavior.

The battery is one year old. It was replaced by a good repair shop with an LMP battery 1. https://lmp-adapter.com

The quality of third party Lithium Batteries are usually poor compared to an OEM battery. There are very few third party Lithium batteries that may be considered somewhat decent in my own personal experience. It is very difficult to find them since some vendors may acquire different batteries due to price & availability.

2. Power Adaptor is pretty new as well. Bought a new one about two years ago when the other one died.

Is it an Apple brand or third party?

Ok, I understand what you are saying.

Well the thing is for a 10 yo computer, they the OEM parts are not available anymore. Also sometimes other brands can come out of the same factory that makes the OEM parts.

Is it an Apple brand or third party?

Yes, the new charger unit is Apple brand.

Well, since booted in Recovery Mode and performed a Disk Utility First Aid operation on my System HD, it seems the Kernel panics are gone. I run a EtreCheck just earlier and its no longer present. While there are other minor issues, it seems running that First Aid operation did the trick. I ran various video streaming test on my computer today and while CPU load was high, the computer did not loose control and freez like it would.
