I would like to use a new device to replace my airport express

My airport express might need to be replaced. What is a more up to date device that serves the same purpose. I saw someone else ask this question but he had a more complex setup.

I suggested the Eero router, because my son purchased one to replace an old AirPort Express, and he thought the Eero ran circles around the Express as far as performance.....speed, signal strength, etc.

If you decide to try the same or similar model, please let us know how things are working for you.

In a separate previous thread, the user told us that they had an older Arris modem and their ISP topped out in the 300 Mbps range. I don't think the older Arris modems could do any more than 100 Mbps.

Since the OP was using an AirPort Express........with a whopping 100 Mbps Ethernet port.....the best that the system could do was 100 Mbps.

Since the user was looking for a similar product as the AirPort Express, I guessed that a router that could handle 500 Mbps would be more than enough.

If the user had mentioned that they planned to upgrade their modem.....(they never did).....or upgrade their current ISP connection......(they never mentioned this either), I would have suggested a faster router. But, there was not much point in suggesting a Gigabit router based on everything that the OP had told us in previous threads.

At this point, we don't even know what the OP decided. We are waiting to hear back from them.

After I did test on my system the airport express started working again, but I don't know for how long.

Good news, you have had very good service from the AirPort Express.

I am using an Arris

I understood that from our previous conversation. If you purchased the Arris about the same time as you did the AirPort Express, that was a good match performance wise. Most of the Arris modems topped out around 100 Mbps 12-15 years ago.

My son was using a Motorola modem with 300 Mbps capability and the ISP connection speed from Spectrum was about 300 Mpbs, so although the Express worked well for a long time, the 100 Mbps capability of the Express was limiting performance on his network.

My son said the setup of the Eero was a breeze using his iPhone......just like the Express set up was very easy and quick.....only took a minute or two to get the Eero up and running. I'm sure that you could use a computer to set up the Eero as well.

If you plan on upgrading your modem to 1,000 Mbps or Gigabit capability and your ISP offers Gigabit speeds, then a Gigabit router would be worth a look.

I understood that you were looking for a replacement for the AirPort Express (and a Gigabit router would have been overkill in a big way), I suggested a product that would do a lot more for less money than the AirPort Express cost originally....about $100.

Since you know that you can get an Eero next day from Amazon or same day if you have a Best Buy near you for about $75, you could run the AirPort Express as long as it will go if it provides the service that you need.

Thanks for the info. The Eero router that I suggested can handle speeds up to 500 Mbps, so if you want to achieve maximum performance, the Arris modem would need to be able to support 500 Mbps and your plan with your Internet Service Provider would need to do the same.

If you are still using the AirPort Express, it has a maximum capability of 100 Mbps.

Another user suggested a different Eero router capable of even faster speeds, which would make sense if your Arris modem has 1,000 Mbps (Gigabit) capability and your ISP plan provides Gigabit speeds.

Well, as BoB Timmons says - look at the speed offered by your ISP, and the speed supported by your modem, and then pick a comparable router. eero (and almost anyone else these days, really) have a wide selection of offerings across different speed bands and WiFi generations.

If I still had an AirPort Express and I needed a replacement device quickly, I would go with something like this:

eero - 6 AX1800 Dual-Band Mesh Wi-Fi 6 Router - White

Best Buy and Amazon have them. About $75 as I recall.

If I wanted to stay with an AirPort Express, there are refurbished and used Expresses on eBay.

Thank you for the recommendation of the Eero router. After I did test on my system the airport express started working again, but I don't know for how long. I have one more question. I'm not using Xfinity's modem. I am using an Arris. Not sure what your son's situation was, but did he have any difficulties setting up the Eero?
