Apple Watch Ultra original ghost/phantom screen touch only with WorkOutDoors app

I realize the issue of ghost touch has been extensively discussed, but this situation is a bit different.

This on an original Ultra running Watch OS 11.5.

I use the WorkOutDoors app for workout tracking. I have the app set up so that Water Lock is enabled automatically for both run and cycling workouts; mainly to avoid sleeve and humidity taps.

Recently, on both run and cycling workouts the watch will, at seemingly random times, announce "pause" and/or "resume". Sometimes it's just a "resume". Sometimes it's just a "pause". Sometimes it's a combination: "pause resume pause resume pause resume".

Since this only happens with the one app I reported it to the developer as a potential bug. The developer had me submit data files which showed that the app had received screen taps at the times I reported the "pause/resume" announcements. The developer agreed that this was impossible as photos of the watch screen showed that water lock was indeed enabled for the workout.

The developer said that no other user has reported a similar problem.

I've tried force rebooting the watch, but the problem persists.

I've tried using Apple's Workout app instead of WorkOutDoors, but the random pause/resume didn't happen. But, I didn't use that app enough for this to be definitive.

The watch is still covered by Apple Care+ but I hesitate to deal with Apple on this as I have no real proof of what is going on and the fact that the problem only happens with one app seems to indicate that it is probably not a hardware problem.

Any ideas on what I ought to do here?

The photo was taken immediately after a phantom "pause". As you can see, Water Lock is enabled and the GPS signal is strong. The workout is auto paused as I had stoped to take the photo.

The Action button is set to do nothing.

I don't think it has anything to do with the app. My guess is that some sort of hardware fault is sending erroneous taps to the app which has to assume that the taps are genuine and acts accordingly.

Here are the developer's comments:

Thanks. That file shows that you manually paused the workout at about the point you mentioned by using the long touch menu. However this was part of a series of things that you did which included tapping once to show a metric; tapping twice to show a full screen map; changing the map type to Thunderforest; and then repeatedly trying to pause/resume.

So I suspect that you are accidentally touching the screen at times (maybe your sleeve). Firstly you just tapped it once; then twice; and then touched it for a second to call up the long touch menu. Once this menu was displayed you tapped Settings then Map and then Thunderforest (which are all in the top right of the screen). You then repeatedly tapped the pause/resume button, which is in the bottom left of the screen.

Another possibility is that the watch is generating "ghost" taps, which was a known issue with watchOS, and can be fixed by rebooting the watch. However your watchOS is up to date so it seems unlikely, but it is always worth rebooting.

At that point he didn't realize that I had enabled Water Lock on start and had already tried rebooting.

So, a mystery.

I think the developer has pretty much established that it's not the app software. The log shows that the watch is erroneously sending taps to the software which is handling those phantom taps appropriately. That is, as if they were real taps.

That said, I was all ready to reinstall the software yesterday afternoon when my wife got home unexpectedly early from work diverting my attention. I never got around to it.

This morning, there were no phantom taps.

So, if I had reinstalled the software I'd be saying now, "Great it worked". But that would have been wrong. I didn't reinstall and something still worked. That's the problem with errors that are not 100% reproducible.

Frankly, I think it's time to give up. It's just a minor annoyance which doesn't affect the workout stats.

Since I still have Apple Care+ so I could raise the issue with them, but I'm afraid that would be an unrewarding waste of time and effort.

Thanks for your help.
