I just got a notification that a NEW Recovery Key has just been activated

A Recovery Key can only be set up from a Trusted Device, so you would need to be using two factor authentication.

  • Did you follow the steps in the first link to secure your account when it has been compromised?
  • Did you have any other devices logged into your account then looking in Settings?
  • I would also suggest to verify the Trusted Phone number on your account to make sure it is yours.

Your phone has not been hacked. It is possible for your account to have been compromised if anyone else is using your account or you have inadvertently given someone your Password to your account. Make sure you are using two factor authentication to make sure no one else can sign into your account from an untrusted device. You can view if there are any other devices signed into your account by going to Settings > [name on top], and scroll to the bottom. Any other device seen there can delete your photos from iCloud. Why would I inadvertently give my password to a stranger

That is the thing. Phishing messages are designed to get you to give out your password to someone you do not think is a stranger. You may even see a message/email that says you need to change your Password and when you click on the link, it takes you to a page that appears to be from Apple and is not. Entering your password, to reset it would just give the scammer your password.
