2013 iMac formatted disk and now very slow

Previous cleaning of 1tb data drive suggested only 1.5 gb left. Performance seemed a bit slow. Was suggested that I repeat following process that cleans drive and reloads OS. This would restore disk with OS and Apps and prepares machine to be offered for sale or trade in. Disk now shows reapportioned memory in keeping with OS and apps but now boot time is 4 minutes and 26 seconds. The disk 'cleaning' and OS restore took about 2 hours and once in motion I saw no hiccup, just lots of lines indicating process beginning and completing. Any ideas as to why so slow.

If the drive with the clean install of macOS has 900GB of Free storage space, then most likely the internal Hard Drive is failing. This option will greatly improve system performance over a slow internal Hard Drive (or on par if the internal drive was a Fusion Drive). However, if the internal Hard Drive failure is severe, then it can impact system performance even when booting to external media.

As long as the internal Hard Drive failure is not extreme where it will cause problems even when booting to external media, then this
