Personal Voice create button greyed out after 3 attempts on my iPhone 15 Pro

Hi.

I tried to record a personal voice, but I wasn't able to finish it all. Assuming I could pause and come back later I exited the app. When I came back later, I could only start creating a new Personal Voice, but my previous partial recording was not there to select. Long story short, I tried it 3 times and now I can't start recording another one, because the button is greyed out.

How can I "reset" my previous attempts, or maybe is there a way to access them anywhere else?

I have already restarted my iPhone multiple times. I do have an iPhone 15 Pro.

I spent an hour on the phone with Apple today, and we tried multiple things. First I was asked to do a re-install of iOS (without deleting everything). That didn't work. So the issue was escalated to the engineering team.

While I am waiting for a response, I thought I could try the nuclear option: Erase all Content and Settings and reinstall iOS on my empty iPhone.

And voila, I am able to start the creating a voice process again. I didn't want to go that route, but I thought because I had already had deleted my settings (including all my apple pay cards), I could do it all fresh.

Have you tried simply restarting your iPhone (deletes temporary files, re-establishes connections, may update recent setting changes etc., and often restores order if something is not working as expected.)

If you still need help:

If live speech is on, try turning that off, then re-check if you can view / use Personal Voice.

Note: "Personal Voice can only be used with Live Speech and third-party apps that you allow, such as augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) apps."

Apple Support's online article: Create a Personal Voice on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac - Apple Support

Eg: says:

"To pause your recording session, tap Done or close the Settings app. Your progress will be saved".

"To resume a recording session:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Personal Voice.
  2. Tap the Personal Voice you want to continue creating.
  3. Tap Continue Recording, then follow the onscreen instructions."

"Delete a Personal Voice

After you’ve deleted a Personal Voice, you won’t be able to recover it.

On your iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Settings app. Tap Accessibility, then tap Personal Voice.
  2. Tap the Personal Voice you want to delete.
  3. Authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID, or enter your passcode.
  4. Tap Delete Voice, then tap Delete Voice And Recordings to confirm"

Thankyou for your reply, and info.

We have no way of knowing whether or not you either tapped "Done" or "closed the Settings app" when pausing, so the recording would save.

If there is an update for your iOS version available (you can check Settings > General > Software Updates) you may want to see if updating may help. (Note: it is always wise to back-up your iPhone before updating the iOS)

I have found this to be reproducible on two separate MacBooks with Apple Silicon running Sequoia 15.5 with separate user accounts. If you already have one Personal Voice and you begin to record training data for a new one, but click "Done" before the training is complete (I did this before the first full prompt, but after the "I am creating a Personal Voice" prompt used to measure background noise), the wizard will cancel back to the main personal voice screen, but now you are in a bad state. The new voice you started will not appear in the UI, but it DOES appear in the files in /Users/<username>/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.accessibility.voicebanking. If you create a new voice with the same name, you will get an error that this voice already exists. And if you do this again (cancel the sample recording process for any reason), then the system thinks you have three personal voices (even though only one is visible), and will grey out the button to create a new one. I spent about eight hours today trying to find a workaround by editing the sqlite files in '/Users/<username>/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.accessibility.voicebanking'. Ultimately the only thing that worked was creating a new throwaway user account on the laptop, saving the contents of the blank '/Users/dummyuser/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.accessibility.voicebanking', booting into Recovery Mode, copying these files into my '/Users/myuser/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.accessibility.voicebanking', updating them so the owner was the current user, rebooting, and then restarting the voice recording process. As long as I did not cancel for any reason, the recording process ran to completion and the training started.

I think there is a major bug here. If you cancel during recording, you are toast.

I spoke to someone at Apple via chat about the same issue. My Personal Voice is grayed out on my iPhone 13 and MacBook Pro running Sequoia 15.5. I stopped 3 times at the beginning stage of setting up the voice because of noise, and the Mac did not save the voice names in a place where I can delete them. Apple is aware of the problem and will be issuing a software update for iPhone. (No timetable set yet.) He wasn't aware of a fix lined up for Mac. He recommended turning off sharing Personal Voice between devices and restarting both devices. Didn't work. Since my devices share the same Apple ID, I'm hoping once the iPhone update is made, I can delete the partially set up voices from my phone, and that will fix the Mac.

I’m facing the exact same issue with my iPhone 14 Pro Max with latest version. I contacted Apple Support and spoke with a representative for about 10 to 15 minutes. I followed all the troubleshooting steps she suggested, but nothing worked. Eventually, she asked me to reset all settings on my iPhone. Due to the one-hour security delay, we had to end the call, and she advised me to try again later but even after doing that, the issue still wasn’t resolved. I also used ChatGPT Pro to perform a deep search for solutions and followed all the recommended steps, but nothing helped. Finally, it suggested signing in with my Apple ID on a different iPhone or doing a full reset of my device which would result in data loss except for the content backed up to iCloud. Is there any other solution to this issue?

This seems fixed in the 18.6 release. It lets me delete two of my unfinished voices and continue the third. Fortunately in my case I didn't lose too much in the two that I deleted. (For those of us who bought an Apple device because we're dealing with a progressive loss of speech, and can only maintain a good voice for short periods, this bug was quite frustrating.)
