How can I unlock a carrier-locked iPhone?

100% incorrect. If you are not a customer with them, they are under no obligation whatsoever to unlock the phone.

Wrong. Requirements vary widely from country to country. In most of the world, the carriers are under no obligation to unlock the phone whether it's paid off or not.

The replacement phone would be carrier Locked in exactly the same what the phone it replaced was.

Where did you get the original phone?

What carrier were you using previously?

If you bought the original phone used, it may have been hacked to illegally unlock it.

Apple should be able to tell you what carrier the phone you have is locked to.
