Why am I getting an error while reinstalling macOS on my old Intel MacBook Pro?

I have an old intel laptop that I wanted to get rid of and have been going through the procedure to erase everything and reinstall the os. I see that I can no longer get the info on the laptop but do know it's around 8 years old, no T2 chip, and an Intel processor. At this point I have run the disk utility to erase the partition. When I then attempt to reinstall the macos I'm getting an error telling me to try reinstalling again. I've gone through this process a few times with the same results. I'm including some pictures (sorry but that's to only thing I could think of) of the screen images including an error log. Any help would be appreciated.

Try booting into Internet Recovery Mode using Command + Option + R to see if you can access the online installer for Monterey or Ventura (depends on the exact model of your laptop). Some Macs may only boot to the online installer which originally shipped with the Mac from the factory regardless of the keys used for booting. People have more difficulty with the older online installers than with the later versions. Apple doesn't always keep these older online installers up to date & functional.

FYI, with macOS 11.x+, you will need to erase the drive as GUID partition and APFS (top option).

When erasing an Intel Mac, I prefer to erase the whole physical internal drive so the partition table is recreated as well instead of just erasing the volume or Volume Group. Within Disk Utility you need to click "View" and select "Show All Devices" before the physical drives are shown on the left pane of Disk Utility.

Do you have access to another working Mac from Late-2009 to mid-2023? If so, then you can try creating & using a bootable macOS USB installer instead using the instructions in the following Apple article:

Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support

Generally to create a bootable macOS USB installer for:

  • macOS 13.x --- a Mac model 2017 to mid-2023 (Intel or M-series) is needed
  • macOS 12.x --- a Mac model 2015 to mid-2022 (Intel or M-series)
  • macOS 11.x --- a Mac model Late-2013 to mid-2021 (Intel or M-series)
  • macOS 10.15 --- a Mac model 2012 to mid-2020 (Intel only)
  • macOS 10.13 --- a Mac model Late-2009 to 2018

You can confirm the other Mac is compatible with a particular version of macOS by using the information in the following article (the other Mac can currently be running any version of macOS):

https://eshop.macsales.com/guides/Mac_OS_X_Compatibility

FYI, you have either a MBPro 2016 or 2017 model. The 2016 model can only run up to macOS 12.x Monterey while the 2017 model can run up to macOS 13.x Ventura. You can get the exact model of the laptop by entering the system serial number on the Check Coverage page here (please don't post your serial number on the forum since it is considered personal information):

Were you having any issues with this laptop before trying to reinstall macOS?
