Is it mandatory to add devices via apple configurator in ABM? we need to test BYOD (iphone) POC using google workspace. We have setup the federation between ABM and Google workspace successfully. Is there a way to bypass ABM or a way to add devices manually with out apple configurator to test user enrollment? If so, please let me know. I am having a tough time with this POC.

You absolutely do NOT want to add BYOD devices to ABM. Only company owned devices should be added to ABM.
Your MDM should have a way of manually enrolling BYOD devices using a downloaded profile, most often via an app.

Thanks for the quick response. Do we need ABM for enrolling iphones in google workspace MDM? can you share the steps please. when i try to enroll my personal ipohone using company email, i am getting the message saying that "your apple account does not support the expected services on this device. please contact your administrator to sign in".

If you are going with BYOD, theres no need for adding devices in ABM. You can try any other BYOD enrollment that doesnt need ABM. There are few MDMs in market who even support corporate enrollment without ABM. I am not sure about Google though.
Ask Google.
