I can't add music files to Apple Music on Windows

I cant add music files to Apple Music, neither from within AM nor by dragging files. If I try, nothing happens, no error message or anything. I have recently changed from iTunes to AM, after having used iTunes for years (although I have been idle for a couple of years). I didn't have this problem in iTunes. I have checked the path from where the files are kept on my (Windows) laptop, and it looks alright, and the system seems to work ok in other aspects as well. I have quite a large music library - meticulously managed - so the problem is very annoying, can anybody help?

What happens if you place copies of some of the files that you want to add inside the Automatically Add to Music folder inside your media folder? If they are valid files they should be added to the Music library and moved to their correct location within the media folder. If Music doesn't like them for reasons then they will end up in a Not Added folder. Which is it?
