macbook pro w/sequoia, plays startup chimes but won’t play music

I’ve gone to settings/audio and internal spkrs. is on. I’ve gone to midi in utilities, and that checks that the spkrs are on. When I click to play a tune, the line registers that it’s playing, and no sound, no matter what I’ve tried.
