How do I get iTunes on PC to detect my iPhone for music syncing?

I'm trying to download and upload music from and to my phone from my pc. I keep seeing a reference to a phone icon on the iTunes app on my pc. It does not show. When I plug my phone into my pc, it shows up as a drive, and I can download files manually. This really feels like Apple only wants me to buy music from them, and my own library be damned. I've looked at Device manager, and it sees an Apple USB device.

Ignore that message and (re)select the drivers as indicated. This should ensure they are reinstalled and configured correctly.

It is perhaps possible that you previously dismissed a 'Trust This Computer' which is no longer being shown when you connect the device. If reinstalling the drivers doesn't help see About the 'Trust This Computer' alert on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support and reset your trust settings.
