I ended up with alternate month entries on date for January, saved as a date, so e.g. Tuesday July 15th
What did I do wrong?

Okay, I'm now completely confused. Do you want the event to occur every month? Or every other month?
If you're getting different days of the week, you haven't set it properly. If you want every other month, see this:
I see now I did not proof read carefully enough.
The calendar is for every other month starting in January.
That yielded results that preserved the day of the week in January and resulted in a calendar where instead of the third Thursday in alternate months there were other days of the week with the same date as in the starting month.
Without being able to see your settings, it's impossible to say what you did wrong.
