How to resolve the 'SSN you entered is not in the proper format' error when applying for Apple Card using an ITIN?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been trying to apply for the Apple Card using my ITIN instead of an SSN, but I keep running into issues, and I’m hoping someone here has had a similar experience or can offer advice.

Here’s a quick rundown of what’s happened so far:

  • I applied from the web and when I reached the screen asking for full SSN details, I entered my full ITIN (as instructed).
  • I then received an error: “The SSN you entered is not in the proper format.” (I’ve attached a screenshot.)
  • I contacted Apple Support, and they suggested trying from the iPhone Wallet app and to make sure my iOS was updated, which I did.
  • On the app, it showed: “Apple Card services are currently unavailable.” I’m located in the U.S., and my region is set to the U.S., so that shouldn’t be the issue.
  • I called support again, and after a screenshare session, Apple Support said the issue was on Goldman Sachs’ side.
  • Goldman Sachs support, however, told me it’s an Apple issue—this back-and-forth went on for over an hour.
  • Eventually, I was told my application had already been submitted and was marked pending, and that I should wait 48 hours.
  • After 48 hours, I called again—they told me to wait another 2 days.
  • After those 2 days, my application was withdrawn without any explanation.
  • I tried applying again, but got the same web error.
  • I called once more, and now they’re saying I have to wait 26 days to hear back.

The last representative I spoke with mentioned there might be an issue with my ITIN, but didn’t elaborate.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? If so, how did you resolve it? I’d really appreciate any insight, especially from those who successfully applied using an ITIN.

Thanks in advance!

You're going to need to continue this with Apple Support and Goldman Sachs.

I can't find any Apple or Goldman Sachs references to an ITIN (with other required identification) being permissible. Or not permissible.

If you haven't already asked about whether a lawful resident with an ITIN is permissible input (and with other required identification, etc) where you're asked for an SSN, you'll want to ask that question. If Apple Support and Goldman Sachs both indicate a lawful resident with an ITIN should work, then there's some other issue arising.

If the problems persist and if a lawful resident with an ITIN s permitted, then you'll want to (need to) continue discussions with Apple Support and Goldman Sachs.

PS: If there are any "coffee shop" VPN clients around, discontinue and remove all of those apps, and re-try.

It appears they are attempting to manually process the account application. Goldman Sachs specifically states a SSN is required to apply. Your persistence may have resulted in a manual review of your application. I’ve never heard of these being successful.

Very few US banks accept ITIN. Last I knew, Bank of America and I think Capital One, accept ITIN. There are probably others.

I suspect what you read was an AI generated text. ChatGPT and the others are generally wrong on these matters. It’s best just to follow the accounts application instructions exactly, in my experience.
