How do I fix 'The file isn't in the correct format' error when opening a recovered LogicPro project on Mac?

When trying to open the recovered project I get the message "The file couldn’t be opened because it isn’t in the correct format. The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format." Tried recommended fixes (replacing ProjectData file, importing into a new LogicPro project) but non work. Importing crashes LogicPro. Any ideas please?

Thank you r4lf for your suggestions.

I've checked all the Library and Application Support folders, including the hidden Library folder, and I can't find any Auto Save or Backup folders/files. The Audio Files folder is empty. The project uses software/sampled instruments only.

I'm working on a MacBook Pro, M2, Sonoma 14.1. and with latest version of LogicProX.

This is what happened ... I duplicated a Logic project folder which contained two different Logic projects in order to create two separate project folders. I placed one project (from one folder) in the trash and, forgetting I was working with an alias of the original project folder, deleted it. This removed that project from both alias folders and the original project folder.

I used Wondershare Recoverit to recover the deleted Logic projects and files. I was able to recover:

  • the alias project folders (contains only exec files)
  • an earlier version of the project from the trash (it will open but does not contain later changes)
  • the original project folder which does contain the deleted project files

The deleted projects recovered in the original project folder will not open. I get the message,"The file couldn’t be opened because it isn’t in the correct format. The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format." Any attempt to import the projects into a new project crashes Logic. I can view the package content for these two projects. I have tried replacing the Project Data file (in 000 folder) with copies from backup files in the folders (01, 02, 03, etc.) but that has not helped.

Is there something that I am missing or is there some way in which I can re-establish the links necessary to open the project files? Unfortunately I do not have back ups of these projects.

Thank you again for your help and to anyone else who has suggestions.

Check for Autosave or Backup files in ~/Library/Application Support/Logic/Project Backups. You might need to hold the Option key in Finder's "Go" menu to access the Library folder.

Look for a backup of your project and try opening it.

Another way is to extract the audio files manually from the project folder. Locate the "Media" or "Audio Files" subfolder, and check for WAV files. These can be important into a fresh new Logic Pro project
