File sharing stopped working after macOS 13.7.5 update

File sharing stopped working after 13.7.5 update between 2 macs (both with 13.7.5).

Anyone with the same issue pls?

I am 100% sure it is the 13.7.5 fault, because it worked just before I ran the updates on both computers.

(Intel Macbook, I can't upgrade to macos 14)

Yes, I tried to disable file sharing, reset mac and enable it again :-)

Thanks @rivmac!

This "smb://name of computer._smb._tcp.local/name of shared folder" method works for me also as a workaround, but what a thing for Apple to break!

Also, mounting shares via NFS also works if you get desperate to re-establish workflows and you really get stuck...

NFS Manager from Bresink Software is a nice GUI for NFS if you won't want to get down and dirty in Terminal.

Please Apple, can you pay some attention to this MAJOR bug and issue a patch ASAP!

Similar problem. We use a shared folder on Intel Mac mini which distributes scanned documents to our local network. After update to 13.7.5 this functionality has failed on several Macs. One M1 iMac with Sonoma 14.7.5 still able to connect to the shared folder, but not others, both intel and Apple silicon. Screen sharing works fine. When clicking on the Finder sidebar network and name of the Ventura machine and attempting to connect to it, continues with "connecting" for ages and does not connect.

Finally got it working by this method.

Using finder click Go, then Connect to Server. Enter the following: smb://name of computer._smb._tcp.local/name of shared folder. Enter credentials of shared folder user and password and it worked. I don't know why, but this has been a real problem for the last 10 days. Hope this works for you too.

Just to say, exactly the same thing here ('Vintage' iMac 18,3). No ideas yet. Printer sharing and Screen sharing working normally. M1 Macbook Air with Sequoia 15.4 sees the iMac in the Finder sidebar, but gives 'Connecting' for hours without an error message. Sequoia sharing to Ventura works perfectly, a temporary solution for me. Antique MacBook Pro with Catalina 10.15.7 also unable to connect to Ventura, though no problem before the update. Curiously, the option 'Allow full disk access for all users' is no longer available in Ventura, though still there in Sequoia.

Same problem here with two Macs running Ventura 13.7.5. Also had no problems before the update.

In the logfile "launchd.log" i see that the daemon "/usr/sbin/smbd" fails to start (launched from /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.smbd.plist).

grep "smbd" /private/var/log/com.apple.xpc.launchd/launchd.log

Screen sharing still works, but I can't connect for file sharing to any other Mac in my homelab (Catalina 10.15.7, Mojave 12.7.6) from Ventura 13.7.5.

On the other hand, connecting to Windows shares works normally.

This is really very annoying.

I reverted to Ventura 13.7.4 on a spare external disk volume and the file sharing problems have been resolved.

Even after numerous Ventura 13.7.4 reboots, remote Finders are still able to connect to it.

It looks like going back to Ventura 13.7.4 is a option for getting my 2017 MacBook Pro fully working.

To connect from iOS/iPadOS to Ventura 13.7.6 via VLC, the server path syntax must be apparently "computername/volumename" or "computername/sharename", without the ".local" bit.

This solved the issue for me (for now) thank you so much!

I've been round in circles on this for days, Apple Support even suggest I contact my ISP!

This thread at least confirmed it was a software issue. Like many, I'm running an older iMac (2017) an since Ventura 13.7.5 (and now .6) file sharing to MBA M2 and iPad Pro was broken. However Screen Share worked.

My experience is the same as everyone else's so I'm pleased in a way I wasn't the only one.

But that change in the server path, removing ".local" connected me straight away.

I was minutes aware from doing a reinstall of Ventura and then hoping I wouldn't ever need to reboot the machine.

Edit: Well it's working for my MBA at least. My iPad seems to connect but not display anything

since the last update of Ventura my Homenetwork is screwed, none of the workarounds from here work for me. atm i am so done with apple. i had the same issues with every update of ventura, but the workarounds worked all the time for me, so it was not a big issue. now nothing works and i am not willing to go on sonoma.

Same thing happened to my 3 macs running Ventura after updating to 13.7.5. All other OS versions (newer & older) on other machines are still working. Screen sharing and ChronoSync backups still working. I've tried everything I can find to fix this other than a clean install.

Unfortunately for me this does not work. I use samba connection for file transfer between Android Mobiles and MacPro. The upgrade to 13.7.5 crashed all these connections with all Filemanager Apps I tried so far.

I can confirm that my iMac, running Ventura 13.7.5, which also experiences file sharing issues, has a partition with High Sierra. Interestingly, when I start the iMac on High Sierra, file sharing functions as expected. However, I believe file sharing problems were also intermittent with 13.7.4, although not as severe as with 13.7.5.

Just as another point of reference (and maybe not that helpful except as confirmation it’s a Ventura 13.7.5 Finder- related issue) …

On my test machine I cloned the “faulty” Ventura volume onto a fresh volume in the same container using the marvellous SuperDuper software

Immediately from my main 13.7.5 machine I was able to access the Shares on the Sequoia test machine “normally” through Finder sidebar entries again.

Have confirmed if I boot back into the Ventura volume on the test machine normal Sharing all goes away again of course …

I’m still holding out hope Apple will fix this and don’t just drop support for updates to Ventura at the upcoming WWDC announcements … that would leave us in a right pickle!

:-)
