How do I restore iPod 4th generation?

hi, I have an iPod classic 4th gen U2 edition (one of these 2,800 × 2,058 if the link works lol)

it comes up on my MacBook Air running macOS sequoia 15.4 in finder and Music, but when I go to click on the name of it the options to like sync, restore, etc endlessly load. I want to restore the iPod but the restore option never appears. I don't have another Mac to try it with nor does anybody else I know, so any help from anyone would be appreciated!! I have tried booting it into recovery mode but not much happened, perhaps I did it the wrong way or I should try again.

thank you

Well, in my experience, older iPods don’t work all that well with modern music/finder. I have never been able to successfully restore an iPod in finder. If you don’t have an old Mac, try installing iTunes on some windows machine. I use iTunes 12.10 on windows to restore flash modded iPods. Works like a charm. But in any case, avoid iTunes from Microsoft store, it’s really bad for some reason. Download 12.10 from Apple: iTunes 12.10.11 for Windows (Windows 64 bit) - Apple Support

Hope that helps.

dont have a PC anymore unfortunately, gave it away after switching to Mac. I'll try again after a restart and use a different port :) I'll let you know what happens when I get around to it. pretty busy procrastinating at the moment haha

on a side note, Restoring iPods on my Mac has been successful before, albeit very convoluted and stressful, it tends to fail and get stuck etc every once in a while but hey maybe windows does the same???

just tried again using a different port, MAJOR MISTAKE.

immediately my Mac began running very slow and the Music app just completely REFUSED to open, finder opened once, only showed the iPod drive but no iPod. closed finder window, reopened and I got the spinning beachball thing. unplugged the iPod without being able to eject it, nothing's corrupted on it but im worried something might be. as soon as I unplugged the iPod my Mac is now working fine, typing this message from it now in fact (thank god my Macs ok) but I'm unsure what to do next.

currently in the process of restoring!!!

it was a very stressful minutes of using Disk Utility for the first time to erase the iPod. It appeared to have gotten stuck on the unmounting process but kept going luckily. gave me an error at the end, but turns out the erase went fine. iPod rebooted and showed up in Finder but not Music. Currently says your Mac is restoring the software on this iPod. let you know when its done and if it did what it was supposed to :)

everything worked great! just restored, iPod asked for firewire but didn't mind a high-power usb wall adapter instead. silly 4th gen!!! only problem, finder went a little funny when iPod was unplugged, thinking it was still in the process of a restore but this has happened to me many times before, a good old restart does the trick.
