How do I fix invisible tabs and forced reloads in Safari 18.4 on Mac with macOS 15.4?

Yesterday I have updated my mac to 15.4 and Safari got updated to 18.4.

Today I have invisible tabs (see screenshot below). Tabs are still there, if I hover with mouse over them I get popup about tab, but I cannot see them and switch to them correctly.

Also in a lot of cases if I leave tab open for some time and do work in other tab and I witch back it force reloads it, losing al my work. This bug is very frustrating and is slowly forcing me to switch to other browser.

Ok found a workaround for now: switch to compact mode

Safari settings -> tabs -> compact mode

It is much worse than separate setting in usage feel, but at least I can see my tabs.

Please Apple next time test things, some of us have more than 200 tabs open :) And it is impossible to find a tab if you don't see them.

100% confirmed. Safari behaves exactly the same for me as well, ever since upgrading to macOS 15.4.

I am stunned that Apple shipped software that is so clearly malfunctioning and even more stunned that there does not seem to be a lot of interest fixing the problem.

I'm also seeing the "invisible" tabs. The issue appears to be:

  • If you have pinned tabs, loose tabs to the right of them will "disappear" once the Safari window width would normally cause them to fall behind the edge of the tab list. When there are no pinned tabs, a lengthy tab list "wraps under" the edge of the Safari window as it always has.
  • You can test this by resizing the width of the Safari window; they will magically appear when the width is great enough for them to all be displayed.

I had the same issue. I thought maybe I could restart Safari but of course that didn't resolve the issue. I am was running macOS Ventura 13.7.4 and updated to 13.7.5 and updated Safari 18.3.1 to Safari 18.4. Being that you are running macOS Sequoia 15.4 and are getting this bug with Safari 18.4 it is safe to say the problem is with Safari 18.4. With some trepidation I looked into reverting Safari back to Safari 18.3.1 until Apple fixes this bug. At first it didn't look promising until I discovered that Mr. Macintosh has links to download current and the last 2 versions of Safari in addition his links to download previous macOS versions.

I downloaded the Safari18.3.1VenturaAuto.pkg which is from Apple's own website. After double clicking on the PKG file, I went through the regular steps to update an App. Just to be safe I restarted my Mac. I then clicked on the Safari icon in the dock and it started right up without any issues. The tab bug did not present itself either. This is a half measure at best as Safari 18.4 has a whole myriad of changes and fixed added to it. See Safari 18.4 Release Notes | Apple Developer Documentation. However hopefully Apple releases an update to fix this ASAP. In the meantime if you want to revert your version of Safari back to 18.3.1 you can find the link here https://mrmacintosh.com/macos-safari-full-installer-database-download-directly-from-apple/.
