Certificates not trusted after upgrading to iPadOS 17.7.5

After upgrading to iPadOS 17.7.5 certificates that used to be trusted are no longer trusted, so websites cannot be accessed. IMAP servers for email also cannot be accessed. How do I resolve the certificate issue?

Do you have difficulty with specific services or websites?

iPadOS updates will occasionally update the Certificate Store to replace or remove outdated or revoked SSL/TLS Certificates.

This type of security maintenance is common to all modern Operating Systems, iOS/iPadOS being no different in this regard. If you are experiencing difficulties with specific website or online services, you would be well advised to seek assistance from the affected service provider.

If you provide additional information as to the services causing difficulty, contributors here may be better able to offer explicit advice.

Deleting and re-adding your email account is sometimes the easiest way to resolve a problem with a specific Mail account. After deleting the account, perform a forced restart before re-adding the email account to your iPad.

  • Delete account:

Settings > Mail > Accounts > [Your Mail Account] > Delete Account

  • Force restart the iPad:

  • Add Mail Account:

Settings > Mail > Add Account

Be aware that some email providers now require the use of App Specific Passwords when accessing mail over IMAP or POP3. If this applies to your email account, you will need to generate a unique password for your iPad email account - that will differ from your normal Account Password. As examples - AOL, Yahoo and Microsoft all use App Specific Passwords when using anything other than their own email client Apps.

If you need to generate an App Specific Password, you’ll need to log-in to your Mail Providers account management webpage - using a web browser - and generate the Password from the appropriate account security page.

More information about AOL’s App Specific Passwords can be found here:

For Yahoo, more information can be found here:

Microsoft:

Google Mail (Gmail) has until recently also used App Specific passwords to access email - although this has now been deprecated in favour of OAuth authentication. Simply removing and re-adding the Gmail account from the Add Account wizard, selecting Google and following the prompts, will correctly configure the correct account settings.

As for NYT, I'm unable to find any problems with image rendering:

I have a number of problems related to the upgrade. An example of the certificate issue occurs with my AOL email accounts. I get the error message “cannot verify server identity. The identity of imap.aol.com cannot be verified.” Under details the message indicates that the certificate associated with AOL is not trusted. The certificate is imap.mail.aol.com.

Another perhaps unrelated issue occurs when I access the New York Times website. None of the images from the website are displayed.
