Apple Books notes update removal help

I have run into a slight annoyance with Apple Books since I last opened the app. Whenever I underline text to annotate, it’s just fine, however the second I type a note to attach to the words, a small circle with a square in it appears.

It covers the words around it and makes it annoying to figure out what words were there and I would have to delete the note to reread that section of writing.

I’ve looked through the Books settings and Settings to see if I can turn off the little circles but have found nothing.

I don’t mind the red underlining and I like it there, but the little circle blocks words.
