Highlighting in apple books app not working

I start the process of choosing the text I want to highlight. But as soon as I click the word ‘highlight’ the option disappears.

Some text in Apple's 'Books' won't highlight. Why? So I've encountered this before and it's so aggravating. Is there a fix? I open a text from which I'm quoting for teaching purposes and I go to highlight a section to read later and it won't highlight. Sometimes it's a few words; sometimes a sentence; sometimes a paragraph or more. But other sections highlight just fine. I keep telling myself that I don't need both Books and Kindle, but this is so frustrating--ESPECIALLY when many of the books cost MORE from Apple, but I love the ability to easily access across all my devices. Anyone know of a fix? Is this even an app issue or a text formatting issue in the ebook? Thanks!

I've figured out how to highlight across multiple pages! In the old iBooks, the page turned automatically to continue the selection. In the new UI, this doesn't happen, so I thought this feature was gone. However, if you pull the selection to the boundary of the page and then turn the page manually, the selection remains, allowing you to adjust it and highlight or copy the text. Highlights function gone? Why can’t I highlight in Apple books after the 16.3.1 update? These books are filled with previous personal highlights but I’m not able to add new ones after updating.

Check for updates to iOS 16.

Try a forced restart: Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

Hold that third button press until the Apple logo appears. Continue to hold that third button press past any sliders that might appear.

If that fails to resolve this, check with Apple Support.
