Why isn’t iTunes Match working on my PC?

I have an extensive song playlist on my computer (PC, not Mac). Many of the songs came from CDs I used to own. I was told (at the Genius Bar) that iTunes Match could be used to transfer those songs to iTunes. The documentation said that this is done through the Apple Music app. When I installed the app on my computer, all of the songs that were already in iTunes (mostly music I’ve purchased through the years) transferred over to Apple Music. I then followed the directions to purchase and begin using the Match, but it didn’t work. It asked if I wanted to add my computer and then prompted me to login to my apple account. Then nothing… I tried several times and had the same outcome every time. Spoke to 4 ppl at Apple Support. There is NO functionality in Apple Music app on the PC. No menu bar, nothing. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Apple Music for Windows is a very poor substitute for iTunes, with many useful features omitted. (iTunes Match might be supported, but I'm not able to check.) I would highly recommend uninstalling Apple Music/Devices/TV so that iTunes isn't limited to working with just audiobooks and podcasts. Once you do this you can use iTunes Match with your iTunes library. You need to be signed into your Apple ID, your computer needs to be authorised to it as well. You can then use Edit > Preferences > General > iCloud Music Library to enable cloud syncing of your library.

iTunes Match can be used to sync your music and playlists to the cloud, and from there to other computers and Apple devices. While more expensive, Apple Music (the subscription service) offers the same set of features but also lets you add content from the Apple Music catalog on demand. It has better integration with HomePod than iTunes Match, which can work but only if the recognize my voice feature is disabled.

Neither service should be considered as a backup. Any content stored only in the cloud, or obtained via the Apple Music service, is lost when the subscription is closed.

After uninstalling Apple Music, Apple TV & Apple Devices you can use the media selection tool at the top left to switch from audiobooks or podcasts to music. It won't swap back on its own. If you've been told that you can use iTunes Match to copy (non-purchased) songs from an Apple device to your computer, that is wrong, that feature is included in an Apple Music subscription, not iTunes Match.

If your existing library is on another computer see Move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Community. If you only have music right now on an Apple device see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - Apple Community.

thank you! I tried uninstalling Apple Music but my songs didn't transfer back to iTunes. I panicked, fearing they'd be lost altogether, and re-installed Apple Music. I'm re-thinking iTunes Match because I don't want to pay $25/year to only use it this once.
