Apple TV remote scroll pad not working

My Apple TV remote works for a short while then the scroll pad stops working. I’ve tried resetting the Apple TV, unplugging it, charging the remote and repairing it to the Apple TV. It pairs ok, everything works except the scroll pad. why does this happen? It seems to be a fault as lots of people are reporting this issue. If all of the above has been tried without success, how do I fix it?
