I didn't realize that I needed to memorize the computer name? Is this new?
Do I need to record and save the names of all my other macs in case this happens on them? i don't remember their names from years ago...
my password has worked no problem, but now i need the name. 'admin' didn't work

The title states you cannot access with PW but then you state PW is fine. If you want change your Mac's name:
Change your computer’s name or local hostname on Mac - Apple Support
You do not need to memorize your computers name to log in. Just your PW.

This is crazy. Who remembers what you called it during the original startup?
Now it continues to ask for the name of the computer. I don't understand how apple thinks this benefits anybody.
But it's probably a better security feature than even passwords are. lol. I mean how is anybody going to guess what the name of the machine is?
I'll have to change it in the lock screen or maybe I'll just keep it like this for added security..
There are few instances when the Mac will ask for the name of the computer.
Please post a screenshot of what you are seeing so that we can all be on the same page and give the best guidance. If you cannot post a pic, please tell us word-for-word exactly what the request says.
Yes. Screenshots of the login screen can be made.
Shift-Command-3 will shoot the whole screen.
Shift-Command-4 will allow you to select an area with the mouse.
Those screenshots will be named "LWScreenShot[...]"
If that doesn't work for you, you can snap a pic with your phone.

When i tried to reinstall the macOS - that login request for a PW also had the name above it, as usual. I wrote it down.
