Is my Mac supposed to be so buggy?

Hello guys,

I've been a Mac user for many years now. My first mac was a 13 inch Macbook Pro from 2019.

Just recently I have now purchased a 15 inch Macbook Air which I really like so far.

But on both models, I kept running into certain issues over and over again.

Like for example, when i close my Mac and it goes into sleep, it never comes back to life when I open it up again. I can keep pressing the power button or certain keys but the screen will stay switched off. I then have to kill the Mac by pressing and holding the power button.

Also, sometimes I cant use my web browsers until i restart my Mac because they just don't work. In safari, it says "Safari can't open this page" and something like unknown error... But its not just safari as Chrome won't work either.

I think its particularly interesting how these issues I ran into on my first Mac still continue to haunt me on the newer model.

On my newer Mac running Sequoia 15.3 ChatGPT has also seized working to the point where I cant even log in anymore...

Maybe its just me but when I buy something as expensive as a Mac i expect it to work without having to reboot it over and over again due to these bugs appearing.

Did anyone here run into these issues and maybe can help me solve some of them?

Thanks very much for your input

Something's changed recently on mine regarding sleep mode, I've raised a question here, but no response so far:

How to prevent MacBook M2 Pro from sleepi… - Apple Community

I've only been on mac for 18 months (work machine) but my background is a windows super user / sysadmin. All the engineers with macs have always told me "once you go mac, you'll never go back". So I gave it the benefit of the doubt.

I tried to learn how to use and embrace it... But I've endured nothing but problems & frustations. Basic functionality that should just work is broken.

Some of my frustrations:

  • Apple can't figure out where the keys reside on a "British PC" keyboard, despite being set to "British - PC"
  • cmd vs ctrl key swap is absolutely devastating for my muscle memory, hopping back and forth between windows and mac makes working painfully inefficient.
  • Apple twiddled a hidden VPN configuration setting that breaks Azure VPNs, and can only be fixed with Apple Configurator, installing the VPN through a "profile"
  • Certificate manager can't handle special characters in certificates PFX password, so I'm forced to use less secure passwords
  • Window management needs a 3rd party app such as Magnet if you're going to use an ultra ultra widescreen
  • Power management requires a 3rd party app such as Amphetamine if you want your mac to stay awake
  • Finder... Don't get me started on finder... I can't paste into a folder unless I double click into it? I can't create a folder in my onedrive (I have to drag a folder in), progress bars are buggy.
  • Powershell might aswell not exist, it's missing so much functionality.
  • The clipboard is just awful, multiple issues such as:
  • I've only had it once, but it kept inserting a random character on text that does not have that character.
  • Does not want to comply sometimes. It takes 3+ attempts to get something on the clipboard (even via right click -> copy)
  • It does not handle remote desktop at all, I can't copy a file with a space in the filename (but this might be a Microsoft bug?)

When I got the mac I was genuinely looking forward to something fresh and new, that all my peers raved about.

When I ask my peers for guidance regarding these problems, they often experience the same issues. They just ignore them or work around them with another 3rd party app. All the while glorifying mac and telling me how great it is.

I think it's a bit of a cult though, and status symbol. They don't care because "look at me I have a shiny mac"

You have an interesting set of problems none of which I’ve experienced. I think it would be useful to know a bit more about your computer - specifically what software and utilities you have installed. A frequent contributor to this help site has created a program called ExtreCheck which scans your computer and creates a document which can be pasted here for us to view. (Yes, the irony of copy/paste problems you experience isn’t lost on me!) The program can be downloaded at this site.

Nobody normally has any problem with that. Tell us exactly what is not working the way you want, especially any keys that do not produce what is printed on them, and we can probably fix it for you. Make sure you are seeing this in the top right corner of your screen:

• cmd vs ctrl key swap is absolutely devastating for my muscle memory, hopping back and forth between windows and mac makes working painfully inefficient.

Have you tried the settings Apple provides to help deal with that?
